WHAT IS suicidal ideation?

Suicidal Ideation is experiencing thoughts and/or feelings about ending your own life.

This can range from thoughts about suicide to having a plan and/or means to attempt suicide.


Risk Factors of suicidal ideation

  • Family history of suicide

  • Mental Illness (most commonly Depression and Anxiety)

  • Previous suicide attempts

  • Alcohol or drug misuse

  • Loss (relational, social, work, or financial)

  • Isolation

  • Unwillingness to seek help due to stigma

  • Hopelessness

  • Helplessness

  • Impulsiveness


Signs of suicidal ideation

  • Talking about wanting to die

  • Feelings of guilt or shame

  • Feeling empty

  • Feeling hopeless

  • Making a plan

  • Changes in behavior

  • Researching ways to die

  • Taking dangerous risks

  • Change in eating habits

  • Change in sleeping habits
